RVCA WOMEN’S ADVOCATE NINA LONG RECENTLY PARTICIPATED IN A COMPETITION HOSTED BY HERRADURA TEQUILA’S ART PROGRAM. THE ART BARREL PROGRAM SELECTED 10 ARTISTS IN 8 CITIES ACROSS THE US AND CHALLENGED THEM TO CREATE AN ART PIECE INCORPORATING THEIR OAK BARRELS. ONE ARTIST WILL BE SELECTED TO RECEIVE AN ESTEEMED ART SCHOLARSHIP.

HERE IS NINA’S STORY:

“I GOT A CALL ASKING ME TO TAKE PART IN THE HERRADURA ART BARREL PROGRAM. THE ORGANIZER HAD COME ACROSS A WINDOW INSTALLATION I HAD RECENTLY DONE AT THE RVCA STORE IN LOS ANGELES VIA INSTAGRAM. I LOVE DEADLINES, SO I WAS LIKE, YES, DUH, TOTALLY, ALSO I LOVE TEQUILA, IM SO IN.

I HAD TWO MONTHS TO REINTERPRET A BARREL THEY HAD SENT ME INTO AN ARTWORK OF MY OWN. I LIKE TO THINK OF MY SCULPTURES/INSTALLATIONS AS MOMENTS OR INTERACTIONS, PORTRAITS OR TINY SLIVERS OF A STORY. IT WAS CLEAR TO ME FROM THE BEGINNING THAT, INSTEAD OF DECORATING THE BARREL OR DENYING IT FROM ITS ORIGINAL FORM, IT WOULD PLAY INTO A STORY.

FROM THEN ON, A RESIN MOLD WAS MADE FROM A FREEHAND SCULPTURE OF TWO CHARACTERS AND THEN PAPER WAS SHRED, PANELS WERE CAST, THEN CUT OFF, SEAMS WERE RECAST….AND THEN ALL OF IT REASSEMBLED INTO A PRACTICALLY WEIGHTLESS VERSION OF THE ORIGINAL SCULPTURE.

THE FINAL RESULT, “ANNI’S PLAY.”

THE SCULPTURE IS OF A BRIDE AND HER GROOM, PROVIDING AN IMAGE FOR THE INEVITABLE CYCLES OF LIFE AS THEY TRUNDLE ATOP ABARREL. AS IN MEXICAN CULTURE AND THEIR EMPOWERED MANNER OF REMEMBERING DEATH, THESE NEWLYWEDS EMBRACE LIFES HARD LESSONS WITH FULLNESS AND A SENSE OF HUMOR.

FOR ME, TEQUILA IS A DRINK THAT MARKS A FESTIVE OCCASION. THE CULTURE FROM WHICH IT COMES, MARRIES THE TRADITIONAL IMAGERY AND PRACTICES OF DEATH, WITH THAT OF REBIRTH AND RENEWAL, CELEBRATING LIFE, LOVE AND SPIRIT WHILE COMMEMORATING THE UNALTERABLE TRUTH OF ONES MORTALITY.

THESE THEMES ARE PARTICULARLY APPLICABLE TO MY OWN LIFE AND WORK. HAVING RECENTLY UNDERSTOOD THE MERRIMENT OF MY OWN MARRIAGE AND THE SORROW OF LOSING A DEAR FAMILY MEMBER.

THE PURE WHITE, I HOPED, WOULD HIGHLIGHT THE SACRED NATURE OF THESE EXPERIENCES FOR ME.

WITH THE MEDIUM OF RICE PAPER REFERRING TO THEPREVALENCE OF PAPERWORKS IN MEXICAN FOLK ART, IT ALSO ALLOWS THE WEIGHTLESSNESS OF THE FIGURES TO REMIND US THE BUOYANCY OF ELATION, WHILE THE HEAVEY BARREL SIGNIFIES THE GRAVITAS OF GRIEF.”
