* Below is an excerpt from Deadbeat Club's site

An explosion of spiked fluorescent pink hair precariously balanced atop a young girl’s head, eyes painted black in the shape of an Egyptian goddess, slender neck choked by a black leather dog collar ringed with metal thorns, a ripped-up t-shirt barely concealing the flesh of her breasts: it had the same shocking effect on a family walking along London’s King’s Road in 1977 as it did on the explorers encountering the Pawnee Indians in 1541, something exotic and strange to behold. Having a punk hairstyle was a way to spit in the eye of polite society, to rebel and depart from the prevailing fashion trends. It was an emblem of non-conformity and a hairdo of defiance - until it wasn’t.

—Excerpt from "On Mohawks" by Ed Templeton

From Disneyland to Detroit, Spokane to Scotland, Hairdos of Defiance highlights Templeton’s encounters with iconic punk-rock plumage across two decades and two continents. Shot on film, the portraits in Hairdos of Defiance track this ubiquitous expression of individuality on friends and strangers.

In the accompanying essay On Mohawks, Templeton reflects on the evolution of the mohawk, from its origins in indigenous culture to its emergence as a punk identifier, to its co-option by the mainstream, to its significance in his own life as an outsider kid growing up in suburbia.

This hardcover book features 62 photographs, printed in an edition of 1,500. Hairdos of Defiance serves as the catalogue for Templeton’s eponymous solo exhibition at Roberts Projects, Los Angeles, on view March 17 - April 21, 2018.

Byron Bay Surf Festival 2018

RVCA is proud to have supported the 2018 Byron Bay Surf Festival. Over the four day festival RVCA supported a range of different events that celebrated surf culture and the arts.

Opening the festival with the Thursday night opening of ‘KUSP’, a collaboration of works from RVCA Advocate Ari Browne, Josh Keogh & JJ Stanbrook that exhibited finless surfboards, acrylic paintings and 35mm photography at the RVCA Back Gallery.

This lead into the short film premiere of ‘Portal’ on Friday night that was shot & edited by JJ Stanbrook - a work of art in its own rights. In terms of the show, the short film acts as the glue that binds experience to surfboard, surfboard to place, and painting to surfboard.

The film also gave the trio an opportunity to tell a story of adventure, fun, and of course, lordish behaviour.

Stanbrook’s knack for story telling and humour are at work as he depicts a washed up idiot, Ari Browne, who, plays himself a he minces around the exotic Moroccan coastline. Lastly the film showcases the exceptional performance attributes of the ten finless surfboards.

And lastly RVCA had a strong contingent of surfers from all over the world including Alex Knost (USA) & Jordan Griffin (NZ) who joined Australian RVCA Advocates Ellis Ericsson, Ari Browne, Raffy Browne & Gus O’Malley.

KUSP | Exhibition from Ari Browne & Josh Keogh

‘KUSP’ is a collaboration between Ari Browne, Joshua Keogh, and JJ Stanbrook. The exhibition is a composite of finless surfboards, acrylic paintings and 35mm photography.

Their pursuits were purely in the name of progress, not perfection. Whilst adhering to popular performance ideas, the surfboards follow a trajectory far different to other surfboard design. The surfboards on show are a rarity in that they move away from typical design processes and start to voluntarily move towards exploring the unknown outer precipice or cusp of surfboard design.

Typically in surfboard design function outweighs form. The aim was to invert this relationship and explore the dynamics that occurs when Form (the appearance of the surfboard) is placed as the priority over function (the performance of the surfboard).

Unsurprisingly the resulting surfboard identify firstly as sculptural objects and secondly as surfboards.

Surprisingly however, no quantifiable sacrifice or detriment to performance was apparent. This is due to the clinical approach Josh took when shaping the surfboards. Seamlessly harmonising performance and aesthetics.

“The boards were well and truly operating in the performance window” Testifies Ari Browne. They all worked amazingly well.” “However,” continues Ari, “My paintings are a different story.”

The paintings strive to inform and embellish the surfboards. They support one another. Hopefully creating a flow of information between surfboard and painting. A relationship where the painting is revealing, and or, concealing something about the surfboard, and vice versa. The paintings are a direct response to the physical appearance of the surfboard, and also the sensations, memories, and feelings experienced whilst ridding them in the Atlantic ocean of the Moroccan coastline.
