one minute with isaac brock | modest mouse | 13 questions

1. What’s your favorite tour you have been on?

this is one of the questions that I have never been able to really
pinpoint an answer to. I guess that when you have spent the majority of your
life touring it just is life. There is every type of day on tour and I
suppose luckily all the good ones and all the bad ones aren’t lumped into
separate tours. I mean I could handle an all good one but I don’t think I
could handle a start to finish bad one. I guess the fact that no matter what
type of day you’ve just had in a town you are gonna leave to the next one
and start over from scratch there. Not necessarily the healthiest way to
condition your mind. I think on the whole I used to enjoy van touring more
than the bus tours that we have been doing for the last couple years, I mean
the bus has it’s merits like a place for everyone to lay down and a
permanent place to hang out if you don’t want to hang out backstage, but
getting to be in charge of taking fun time stops at what ever place you
want. That and the oddly enjoyable been driving too long delirium and the
comedy that follows in the wee hours of the morning.

2. Where is your favorite place you have been?

Somewhere else.

3. How many instruments do you play?

I don’t think I officially play any.
My overall approach to music has always been any instrument that you could
pick up, and make a sound you were liking with it, then you were playing it,
but I don’t think that that would fly with purists.

4. Do you have a fascination with taxidermy?

well, I really like critters and a lot of the ones I really like would
make shitty roommates so without actually having the things killed for me or
doing it myself, I only buy taxidermy that is second hand/antique/or in some
way removed from the “Go kill a weird animal for me to snazz up my place
with and I’ll pay you” thing. I have a fox named frizzle fratz, a russian
wild boar, a badger, a snow owl, a bunch of ducks all in the same box, one
rad duck in it’s own, then theres all the insects and coral and a mowhawk
hair-doo.

5. What’s something that many people would not know about you?

I was in a “don’t do drugs” commercial when I was about 12. Boy did that back fire on them!

6. Do you have a favorite band?

I have a lot of favorite bands. That has a lot to do with who I am playing music for, I get really excited about playing people my favorite bands that I think they would like to hear, so those bands become even more my favorites for those few minutes.

7. Words you like to hear most?

Catacomb, parsnip

8. Words you least like to hear?

Any words chained together in a way
to make hipies or intelectuals feel good about themselves. That, and big
words used for only for the purpose of using large complicated words that
have a simple and commonly understood synonym that could be used in their
place

9. Do you have a favorite quote?

A lot of them but one of them is by
Davd berman of the silver jews. It goes something like this. ” I’m afraid I
have more in common with who I was than who I am becoming.”

10. Have you been on a vacation lately?

Yeah, I went to hawaii, you were there we had a good time except when I got all cranky at everyone over picking a place to eat.

11. What do you enjoy doing when you are not on the road?

Lately it’s been gardening.

12. What time do you go to sleep at?

Between three a.m. and six a.m. And
sometimes at about 4 p.m. For two hours or more or less. All these hours
make me feel guilty because I would really like to go to bed at midnight and
wake up at 8 a.m. Occasionally I do this and I feel like I have somehow
totally turned my life into something respectable. You know, like I received
a whole bunch of amazing degrees in all the brainiest of sciences, I have a
super productive farm with non collapsible bees. This is just not the case.

13. What inspires you? Motivates you? Drives you?

That really varies but I
think it’s hearing about people doing things that I wish I were doing, then
I get jealous and the jealousy motivates me. caffeine motivates me too.

ONE MINUTE WITH Jason Lytle | GRANDADDY | 15 QUESTIONS

1. Where are you originally from?

The Central Valley of California. Modesto specifically.

2. Where are you currently living? And why?

I live in Bozeman Montana. I love mountains, rivers, lakes, and outdoorsy stuff.
I am surrounded by all of those things here. My hometown in California had become dirty, broken, and gross. It wasn’t like that when I was younger.
The skate parks in Montana kick ass too.

3. Does the weather affect your moods?

The weather does affect my moods very much. Although there is something great to be said about all of the elements. Although I have to say, I m’ not too into wind . Its bad for bikes ,skateboards, tents, and allergies.

4. Montana the winters are cold, what do you do to pass the time there?

Snow here means skiing here for me.(downhill and cross country).
And luckily this last year (long winter) it meant” time to record a solo album”.

5. Do you have any pets?

I have no pets

6. What inspires you, motivates you, moves you?

People who survive things. People who automatically tap into strength when they really need it. I love reading memoirs and biographies so I can feel closer to humans. I spend a lot of time alone, or in my head, and for some reason end up feeling more related to birds or animals or insects or plants. Definitely more so than people. Most people on this planet are just ridiculous anyways.

7. Have you always made music?

I dabbled mostly till I was 18. No formal training ,except for playing drums in the school band. At home I just messed around on crappy drums, a clunker piano,
and a warped guitar. Then around 19 I had the weird “blessing in disguise” and tore my ACL in my knee on a vert ramp .So after years of skating road tripping, quitting jobs for skating, giving up school for skating, and a handful of sponsored am vert contests, I went from “fulltime sponsored skateboard guy” to
“fulltime bedroom 4-track music recorder guy”.

8. Are you doing any projects now?

I just finished my record (to be released early 2009).I did some vocals for a Dangermouse/Sparklehorse album that’s still being made. I sang and played on my buddy M.Ward’s new record. Ive been doing music for the random commercial that my manager might bring to me. And lately I’ve been stoked on drawing and doing art again, like when I was a little kid, which is making its way into album art, and possible merchandise art for some possible future touring.

9. What are your favorite words?

Favorite words…….how about “wooden”.
I also have the word “skate” tattooed on my hand which has done well to repel employers, possible in-laws, religious types, and stuffy people in general.
I like that word a lot.

10. Least favorite words?

America might lay off the word “Amazing” for a few decades. Also…..
I don’t think I like the word “bills” very much. Or “balls” for that matter.

11. Are you working on any projects right now?

I am tearing apart and relocating my studio right now. This is a terrifying project that usually takes weeks to mentally prepare for, and months to rebuild.
And unfortunately it transforms me into a confused captain without a ship.

12. Have you embraced the computer world/ email since you started living in Montana?

“Internet world” here in Montana is actually super solid and fast.(maybe due to not being as jammed and congested as California), so my main limitations on a computer are due to my shitty typing skills. But, in general, yes I have become quite embraceful of the interwebby.

13. Do you have a favorite lyric from a song?

“Losing wouldn’t be so bad at all, but I’m always on a mountain when I fall”
Merle Haggard

14. What words best describe you?

Friendly, Restless, Foolhardy,
Stoked, Exhausted (all in that order)

15. do you have any new favorite things?

I just bought a kick ass little transistor radio at a junk shop for
8 dollars that I really like……but I suppose my new album is my new favorite thing for the time being.
