Michael Spencer, Australian team rider, has been jetting around and spent some time in New Zealand last July. He  finally got around to making something we could all share from it.

Ryan Callinan, Rangi Ormand, Nicholas Damen and Spencer went on a 10 day camper van vagabond around the North Island of New Zealand having Rangi the New Zealand guru show the guys where to go and what to do. Well here is the beginning of installment number 2 from the proving grounds of Aloha. 
After Thanksgiving Day, the boys needed to burn off some of the bread, turkey, gravy and all the other goodness from the feast, so Barca and the boys invited us up to the Boars Nest training facility somewhere above V-Land.

Barry McGee got his ab crunch on while the boys warmed up.

The Mendes Brothers, world champs, gave some insight to all the boys, including Makua.

Fuller was getting his boxing on. Coach says he has one of the heaviest most natural sneaker right handers he’s seen… careful of who you drop in on.

Word on the streets and the internet is that there are waves on the way so the boys start unbagging their respective quivers and contemplate future aquatic scenarios and the saline ledges they would be hopefully hucking themselves over.

Barry’s last day was arriving, so he would spend hours over hours out at V-Land and Freddy Land, trimming the days away.

Meanwhile below, Kevin Ancell was on board number 24 of 50+ for the local boys. A common beautiful theme among the boards were AI and Sion tributes, the two recently fallen brethren.

The first little bump of the swell came with a bit of wind and a weird direction, but left for some fun waves for Ellis and Knost to grab some trim a little west of the typical stretch.

Meanwhile, during the first bump of swell, the Eddie invite ceremony was to commence at Waimea, two of our own, Makua and Danny were invited.

There is such a great energy of community gratitude for Makua and his Family at the ceremony with even little local groms chasing him up the beach yelling “uncle Makua! Uncle Makua!” just looking for a high 5.

We brought out the Mendes Brothers, THE Jiu Jitsu world champions to hang out with the crew and tie us into some pretzels. Absolutely the nicest guys.

Kevin Ancell is also here, and has a rumored 40+ surfboard waiting list of boards he has to paint for all the local boys from Makua to Kala to Kamalei and Reef. Below is one of 3 he has already done for Makua, 2 of which Makua has already broken.

This is Etienne. If you didnt already know, he is the man and is completely nuts, with the camera that is. He is here to document everything from the sunrise to the sunsets and everything in between.

Remember a few posts back I showed those photos of Knost and Ellis Ericson hand shaping their boards for Hawaii? Well, even though the surf has sucked, Ellis has gotten around to trying his board out and its been goin pretty sick he says. Im lookin to give it a go soon. He has also been messing around with it finless. Some transcendental stuff going on already out here…

When you are without a car, or “whipless” on the north shore, throwing out a thumb on Kamehameha Highway is the norm. In the below self portrait photo of my in the back of this kind surfers truck, my phone fell out of my trunks. After Etienne and I jumped out of the truck and threw our shakas, shortly after i realized my phone had fallen out in the bed of the truck. No worries. Ettiene happen to know the guy and Makua had the dudes number so within hours, my phone was safely returned.

Every year Makua gets together with familys from around the north shore and helps organize and cook Thanksgiving meals with a big emu. An emu is basically a large fire-pit in the ground where mass amounts of food gets tossed in to get cooked overnight. Keep scrolling and you will get what i mean. Below, Makua is prepping some of the feast in his backyard.

Here is the fire pit. The fire pits burn for hours and hours, heating up a bed of lava or river bed rocks. This was done at the locals house in Pupukea. Amazing family vibes as everyone gathers around, drinks beers and hangs out as they throw their portion of meat and veggies in for the cooking.

All the groms show up and hang too.

Here everyone starts covering the flames to put out the fire. First with a chain link fence. The second layer is split bamboo stalk.

The third layer is quickly then put on of heaps of massive banana leafs.After that bed is put down, everyone brings over their tin full of pork butts, turkeys, and whatever else they want to cook overnight. The next day, we all converged at PM’s house. The photo below is the ultimate culmination of the balance of opposites.
