Let there be arts and crafts and surfing and rafts. This was a morning spent using the left side of the brain or right side, whichever is the more creative and daring side….

Barry McGee and crew descended on the Houston Street wall. Beginning at midnight McGee, together with longtime collaborator Josh Lazcano (Amaze), began a massive spray-painting spree, bombarding the surface with hundreds of simple red tags. Working through the cover of night, the team created the ultimate graffiti writer’s roll call and a strangely beautiful, if not challenging piece of commissioned abstract art. By dawn, it would go much farther than even they could have imagined.

We woke up in front of world famous surf break, “The Rock”, known for it’s rocky land mine covered faces and overall average quality. As I wiped the eye boogers off, I watched AL knost streak across a wall. He was up early and stayed out for a three hour power surf. Everyone else rolled out of bed late and waxed up their sticks. The morning was productive and as the day carried on, the cameras were out and things were getting crazy – we ended up pulling out all our surf toys and surfing the backwash going back out to sea. 5 foot waves would crash up against a wall, sending a three foot wave back out to sea.. We were so caught up in having fun, we destroyed three surfboards and dung up a few others ( this is where the Dings come from). The footage is priceless, people being taken out, boards crashing up against the wall.

Kalani woke up late, had some cheerios and charged out.

After having one of the worst Southern California summer’s to date, I decided it was time to gather the team and head for a warm water paradise or the closest thing to it. Seeing a nice South Swell forming in the window for Mexico, I did some research and saw that the best weather would be at the tip of Cabo. I’m pretty sure I was 18 the last time I went on a surf trip to Cabo : Cabo Wabo, Giggling Marlon, Squid Row and the occasional trip to the East Cape to surf, good times… I called up the bros and rallied my crew – Ford Archbold for some hi-fi shredding, Alex Knost to inspire style, the 12 year old phenom Kalani David to blow everyone’s mind, Alex Kopps for his revolutionary sense of humor and wild floaters, Keegan Gibbs to make movie magic and Jeremiah Klein to capture it all with the shutter.

Ahhh warm water and beautiful beaches.

RETNA and EL MAC have teamed up for another mural, this time in Culver City. Their newest mural, titled Of Our Youth, can be seen on the side of Graphaids art supply store, on La Cienega between Jefferson and Washington.

The imagery and text used in this mural was inspired by their time spent at Skid Row, while painting their previous mural. The artists met a man by the name of Ralph Woodruff aka Chato and were inspired by this man’s past hardships, experiences and overall outlook on life. His ability to recognize his mistakes and atone for his sordid past was something that resonated with RETNA. The text which reads, “So today I’m trying to change a few things to rectify the situation of my past. So today I’m looking towards the future (of our youth highlighted)” is a quote taken from their conversation.

The mural was made possible by graphaids.com , riveraandrivera.com, and rvca.com
