AUSTRALIA / NEW ZEALAND

PHOTO BLOG | B. MCLACHLAN

Western Australia was home for Banjo McLachlan for about six weeks at the start of this year; to live off the land, surf and shoot as much as possible. He forwarded over some new photos that we thought to share. His travels documented a vast array of drifters, hippies, lovers, old-mates, pubs, dusty roads, empty beaches, run-down people movers and also even sharks.

A new photo blog to show all his excesses in imagery each day, week, month - has also just launched, which you can view here: banjomclachlan.tumblr.com

JIM HOUSER AT MONSTER CHILDREN GALLERY

picture-1

About the Exhibition:
Jim Houser is a self-taught Philadelphia painter and installation artist, well known for his personal images on small canvases, juxtaposed with text and objects. Jim got his start at Space 1026 back in 1998. His artworks have graced the walls and floors of galleries around the world including Jonathan Levine Gallery in NYC, Merry Karnowsky Gallery in LA, and Colette Gallery in Paris. A monograph of Houser’s work titled Babel was published by Ginko Press.

For THE PREGNANT PAUSE, Houser continues to translate an acute awareness of words and sensitivity to his surroundings through his art. Working in a style of free-association, Houser creates profound and uplifting poetry, which renders his art carefree and innocent. Houser’s fascination with word association parlays to a distinct aesthetic and mode of communication — a new visual language. Choosing words that interest him, either for their visual or aural properties, Houser is concerned with transcribing subjective elements through a basic vocabulary of images. Each work is related through theme, color, and text, forming a deep-coded composition, where the viewer activates a dialogue and participates in a seemingly complex narrative.

Structured compositions and harmonious color palette enhance the curious nature of meticulous and refined renderings in Houser’s paintings. Houser’s controlled line, flat color and sectioned narratives reveal a heightened precision, yet are distinctly handmade. Comprised of a system of ideas and methods, Houser’s work is a catalogue of his active observations and experiences transferred to multiple forms of tangible surfaces and objects. The result is a body of work that is extremely personal and accessible, rich with iconography of word, phrase, and symbol fused seamlessly together to illustrate the human condition. “That’s how I wanted to present my work,” explains Houser, “in the context of the world that I occupy. All my influences are present there.”

RVCA INDUSTRY PROFILE

Ok, so Active are not an Aussie store nor do they really have anything to do with Australia, but this little video they made featuring the Tempster and RVCA US HQ was just too damn good not to post.
Enjoy.

AVATAR! AVATAR! AVATAR!

…Was the nickname and chant sung out for Nathan Webster (by his teammates) each time he paddled out for his heat to help bring club; North Narrabeen to victory over the weekend, for the Jim Beam Surftag Australian Championships.
Why the nickname? Because Nathan was looking a lot like the big blue, long-haired creature from the movie. Guess the photos below show some resemblance.

This years Surftag final saw the country’s best 24 teams come together and compete for the $40,000 and up prize purse - with North Narrabeen reigning as the champs, celebrating long into the early hours of Monday morning.

Thanks to Bluesnapper for the pics.

ENJOY THE PROCESS

The offices are coming together nicely at our new Sydney digs. The phones are nearly connected, the computers are sort of running and were searching out the best place to put the couches and the beer fridge. Its all about priorities…We have some wall collages up however, that part came first - there’s assorted Loversland, McGee, Erin Wasson, Dylan Martorell and Alex Knost + Japanese Motors imagery which has been installed around the joint. Ive taken crappy photos i know, but hey in reality it looks nice and clean. A Cinelli x RVCA fixed gear, also takes pride of place in the window just for good measure.

SLEEPY SANDY SLABS

While most people are still tucked away in bed sneaking their last few z’s in, our good pal Ellis is at it again already up and in the water before first light, fiendishly pig-dogging sandy slabs by the seashore.

Big ups to The Sea Life for the pics. Subscribe to them here http://thesealife.com.au/
